Currituck murder trial jury selected in murder case

A Currituck County jury was being chosen Monday afternoon in the trial of a man charged with killing his neighbor in Gibbs Woods.
Charles Newcomb, 61, of the 100 block of Newbern Drive, Gibbs Woods, is charged with shooting Joyce Gabbard, a 61-year-old woman who lived next door to Newcomb and was his landlord. Gabbard was killed on Oct. 7, 2007.
Whalehead Trust won't take stance on rest-rooms

Camden resident questions retreat location

Some residents in Camden County are upset about the Camden commissioners’ upcoming retreat, not because they’re having one, but because of the location — the Currituck Cooperative Extension Center.
Camden resident Mark Durden said he’s also concerned that Camden commissioners are having the retreat, planned for next month, catered by Currituck restaurants.
Student charged for false bomb threat

A 16-year-old student was charged with making a false bomb report at Currituck County High School last month.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a bomb threat on Feb. 9 about 1:35 p.m. The threat was that a bomb attack would take place, according to a news release by Sheriff Susan Johnson.
Oil reservoir returned to lighthouse

An oil reservoir built around 1870 that once held fuel for the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and which has been with the National Park Service Cape Hatteras (NPS) since 1949, was recently returned to the lighthouse, according to a press release from Meghan Agresto, site manager for the lighthouse.
Wesley House to close doors March 31

Elizabeth City’s Wesley Hospitality House will be officially closing its doors on March 31, Executive Director Gustave Smith said Monday.
“We’ll keep operating as usual because we have some reservations,” he said of Wesley Hospitality House, where families of patients have been able to stay affordably while their loved ones are treated at Albemarle Hospital.

But these things happen — particularly when the athletes are just 6 years old.
